Read moreThis uniquely balancing signature treatment from Aveda blends massage, reflexology and energy work into a very special experience. Designed by Aveda's Spa Global educator, Marc Zollicoffer, it incorporates specially chosen aromatic oils and simple, but meditative guided visualizations to bring you to a place of true balance. The word "balance" gets tossed around a lot these days, but in this treatment it means specific things. You will feel more grounded and less anxious, your senses nourished, your intentions clarified, your body and mind harmonized by a more open heart. A more balanced throat chakra enables you to express your unique self with more creativity and effectiveness. Activating your brow chakra will help you to trust your intuition and to recall your dreams. And who doesn’t want more wisdom or to feel bliss?! Chakras are part of a 5,000 year old system of Ayurvedic medicine and yoga from India, both of which are holistic ways of explaining and addressing health and development. The Sanskrit word chakra means “wheel” and the metaphorical imagery is of seven vortexes of energy spinning like wheels, either turning too quickly, too slowly, or just right. These main chakras are arranged vertically along the spine from tailbone to the crown of the head and each chakra governs a different region of the body, different emotions, and because they work sequentially they can also be seen to govern different stages of psychological and spiritual development. Essentially, chakras are the junction between consciousness (mind) and matter (body), where we receive, absorb and distribute our own life energies. They can become either deficient or excessive and therefore imbalanced. And these imbalances can be due to internal or external causes: chronic physical tension or temporary negative emotional states or reactions. Sometimes imbalance is caused by focusing too much on a specific life issue or the ways we handle it. Aveda highlights each chakra's focus, or life issue, with these meditative words: grounding, nourishment, intention, harmony, expression, insight, and wisdom. Rather than "fixing" or curing an imbalanced chakra, and being sure not to delve into psychological counseling, it is more helpful to think of this treatment as helping your body, mind and energy begin to move in the right direction on a spectrum towards greater balance. Your massage begins with 7 colourful chakra cards which will be used to help you choose the oil blend that will be the focus of your treatment. Massage, heat, and visualization will be used to balance all the chakras, but your chosen essential oil blend will particularly focus on balancing one of the chakras. Your choice of 3 cards from the 7 will honour your mind/heart, and then choosing one of three aromas will honour your body's intuition and wisdom. Firstly, we address back tension with slow, specific massage and the application of Aveda's Active Composition. This topical pain-reliever, made from wintergreen, will enliven your senses and penetrate deep into muscles associated with your solar plexus and heart chakras. A hot steamed towel is added to enhance this effect. You are then guided through 3 simple visualizations to help increase your awareness of the 1st, 4th and 5th chakras. Visualization is also a general way to promote insight and to balance the brow chakra, or 3rd eye. The 2nd half of the treatment involves you lying on your back, and we wrap your feet in hot towels, place warm chakra stones on the blanket at the location of your lower and upper abdomen, on your sternum, and between the eyebrows. These correspond to the 2nd, 3rd, and 6th chakras. More of your chosen aroma is spritzed in the air and we massage your hands, arms, shoulder, neck and scalp with your chosen chakra oil added to a base of unscented coconut oil. This work especially helps to promote harmony, expression and wisdom. The reflexology foot treatment portion focuses on two aspects of the chakras: the physical location of the chakra corresponding to the spinal reflexes on the foot, and the endocrine gland reflex associated with each chakra. This is a brief but focused technique that is both grounding and can profoundly reduce stress. A blend of hydrating formula, your chakra balancing oil and Aveda's (peppermint) Blue Oil enhances your experience. Your treatment concludes with guided visualizations of the final 4 chakras, progressing in an ascending manner and finishing at the crown of the head to promote wisdom and bliss. By John Ireland, CST, RRPr, BA John Ireland began practicing as an Alternative Therapist at Ste.
